30 Day Blog Challenge - A Piece Of Advice I Have For Others

Day 8 - A Piece Of Advice I Have For Others

Asides from not eating yellow snow? Oh, come on, it was an obvious joke. I would have been a complete fool not to use it.

Advice?

Don't take your loved one for granted. Tell them you love them as often as possible, because you never know when you'll get the chance to do it again.

Live your life without regrets. Lessons learned are one thing, but recklessness because of ignorance is sheer stupidity.

Cherish your children. Every moment is special.

Treat others how you wish to be treated.

Don't leave dogs in cars in the summer. Even with the windows down just enough so the dog can't escape,  your car becomes an oven.

Oh, and always wear a bra - no matter how small your boobies!

30 Day Blog Challenge - The thing I'm most afraid of

Day 7 - The thing I'm most afraid of.

For me, this was a simple one. I'm afraid of two things: my children dying or me dying and leaving them behind. I don't wish to be morbid, and I know those two things are probably as cliche as my fear of spiders and creepy crawlies flying near my face, but they genuinely terrify me and keep me awake at night. I've come close to losing them both at one time or another, and that lead me to a very dark place. My children are everything to me, as are most kids to their parents, but we have a special and unique relationship that has been hard and fraught at times, but for the most part has been so filled with laughter, it's all I can do to stop myself from crying when I think of the sound of their laughter. I won't elaborate further.

I also have a fear of drowning or fire. Fire freaks me out, but that's because I set my house alight when I was five. Little pyromaniac that I was!

30 Day Blog Challenge - What do I do?

Day 6 - If you couldn't answer with your job, how would you answer the question, 'what do you do'?

The answer to this is simple: I am a mother. I am a full time mum to my twin boys, Charlie and Harry. I am also a full time carer for Charlie. Apart from having ARPKD with hypertension, he is also autistic. These things combined means I have a bit of a job on my hands. In truth, I am so ready to go to work, but this is one of those months that proves I can't. This July brings nine, yeah, you read it right, nine hospital appointments. We're waiting on one more. His needs range from the complex to the simplest of things. He still struggles with doing up buttons, for example. He's eleven. These are basic things, but I'm not sure how much I want to put here, because these are not the things that define him.

Apart from being a mum, I'm a wannabe counselor/psychologist, and a chef. I dream of owning a bloody burger van, for goodness' sakes, but above all, I want to be able to help support those who found or will find themselves in the same position I did over eleven years ago when I was told my son would likely die, and when he didn't, I was told he had a very serious illness that would be with him for life. I had no outside professional support. I believe in the power of talking as therapy.

30 Day Blog Challenge - Profess my love

Day 5 - Publicly profess your love and devotion for one of your blogger friends. What makes them great? Why do you love them? If you don't have blogger friends, talk about a real-life friend or even a family member.

The only blogger friend I really have is my sister. I'm not proficient in blogging yet, and so don't know many people. I want to publicly profess my love for her because she's amazing. My sister, Mhairi, is dyslexic, and has huge issues with her confidence, but she hasn't let that stop her from blogging. I have a special post all ready to post for her, but I can't yet.

I love my mum and dad and my family. I am terrible at keeping in touch with every single one of them, and it makes me feel terrible. I never phone my Gran, yet I think of her all the time. I am so consumed with my life this year, that I have been a terrible daughter and granddaughter. I need to make changes, and quickly.

I love my boyfriend. We don't have a terribly conventional relationship for many reasons, but his faith in me never wavers, even when I don't deserve it. We're both hard work at times, but the one thing we do that keeps us going even in the tough times is laugh. We laugh all the damn time. Even when it's not entirely appropriate. When I'm feeling at my worst, he makes me feel better by making me laugh. I love that about him

I also want to profess my love for my boys. My God, they are perfect. I will one day write something really special for them. I want to write it, because one day I won't be here, and on the days where they ever wonder if I truly loved them, they can look here and know that I did. With all my heart.

30 Day Blog Challenge - Favourite Quote

Day 4 - Favourite quote and why I love it.

I have a fair few favourite quotes, in fact, they are all on my Facebook 'about me' section. The range from the sublime (you know, the one's that make me appear educated), to the utterly ridiulous (you know, the one's that make me seem, well, ridiculous. I have quotes from Micheal Angelo, right down to Christoper Robin from Winnie The Pooh.

Here is my most favourite:

"Note how democratic is the earth. Today a respectable married couple sleeps on the same bit of ground that yesterday suffered a couple living in sin. Tomorrow a priest may sleep there, then a murderer, then a blacksmith, then a poet; and, like shipwrecked persons whose lifeboat has delivered them safely to shore, they will bless this bit of ground, for it gives them the illusion of security."

Machado de Assis, Memórias Póstumas de Brás Cubas (1881)

I don't actually have a clue who Machado was; I really should investigate. I love the quote because it reminds me of that saying about how we shouldn't judge others just because they sin differently than we do. It's so true. I think it speaks of materialism and our need for security and it doesn't always matter where we find it. Whatever walk of life we're from, we are all made up of the same hopes, dreams and fears; we all cling on to a sense of security, yet judge the man who walks besides us because they aren't like us. Just one of those things that makes me think.
"A day without sunshine is like, you know, night."
— Steve Martin

Just because!

30 Day Blog Challenge - Things that make me uncomfortable

Day 3 - Things that make me uncomfortable.
There are lots of things that make me uncomfortable, but the main culprit has to be men looking at me. It’s not something that happens often, but when it does, it’s usually unwelcome attention because they either smell, have rotten teeth, are older than Jesus, or questionable morals. Sometimes they have all three qualities – or lack thereof.

Also, you know that feeling you get when you’re walking ahead of a group of men? It’s awful. I always assume people’s thoughts of me are the worst, so I end up walking like a chimp on speed. It’s not attractive.

Other parents telling their kids off when I have no problem telling my own makes me really uncomfortable. I invariably feel bad for them and want to hug them - the kids, not the parents.

Kids hurting themselves through accidents can make my skin literally crawl.

I don’t accept compliments from anyone very easily.

I don’t like working for other women. Women can be bitches and they usually see me as a pushover and treat me like crap. The older I get, the more able I am to handle this, but I find it incredibly uncomfortable. By the same token, I have worked for some wonderful women, so I can’t complain too much.

I find large crowds and new people difficult to cope with. It’s getting better because I am forcing myself to deal with my inhibitions, but I have a way to go yet.

30 Day Blog Challenge - Educate you on something I know a lot about or I am good at

Day 2 - Educate you on something I know a lot about or I am good at.

Oh crikey, really? I’m not a confident person and don’t have much faith in my ability to do most things. If ever I brag or boast, it’s usually a false cover to hide the fact I’m bricking it.

In fairness, there are things I’m good at; cooking is one of them, but I’m not sure I could educate you on the finer details of boiling an egg, because the boiled egg is my nemesis – probably because I don’t like eggs unless they’re in a Spanish tortilla!

There are certain things I make that absolutely rock. Really simple things, but I somehow rock them. Chicken Schnitzel is a favourite. So simple and I swear by Panko breadcrumbs. Don’t deep fry, but shallow fry in about a cm of olive oil. You’re onto a winner. I make the meanest Italian ragu outside of Italy. My lasagne won the heart and mind of my (now) pot-bellied beefcake that is my boyfriend. He had a six pack when I met him. *sigh*

I don’t believe in packet mixes (she says after cheating with a packet mix for a chilli con carne), and if I can make it from scratch, I will. For me, it all boils down to time. Even my pasta sauces are made from scratch. All my sauces and casseroles, even my Bolognese, are cooked low and slow, and for hours.

Something I know a lot about and nothing at all is ARPKD. I don’t think I could educate you on that, because it’s so complicated for me. It’s a polycystic kidney disease and my son has it. You can read about it here.

30 Day Blog Challenge - The Story of My Life in 250 Words

On Thursday last week, a new 30 Day Blog Challenge was started by one of my sister's friends. My sister is a plus size blogger, as are most of her blogging friends. I am not. I don't really know what I want to blog about yet, and I thought this might get the creativity flowing in me, so when I saw the blog challenge, I asked if I could take part. I'm glad I did. The questions and suggestions are very interesting. You'd think that writing your life story in 250 words would be easy. It is not! I am suddenly stumped. I know where to start and where to end, but what do I do in the middle. However, here goes:

The story of my life in 250 words. Day 1

I was born in Forth Park Hospital in Kirkcaldy, Scotland on September 22nd, 1976. I’m  a Wednesday’s child; they’re full of woe. This does not bode well for this particular post, does it?
I’m actually happy go lucky, but I have terribly itchy feet; always wanting to move somewhere. I think that’s largely in part to the fact I’ve moved around a lot, and I’ve never really settled. We move when I was two, to a little village called Boosebeck in the North of England. This is where my mum was from. My dad is Scottish. We moved to London when I was 9 and I moved to Wales when I was 19 (1996) after getting married. I married young and I married wrong. We then moved to Mallorca in 1999. My twin sons were born in 2002 and they caused me more heartache than you could possibly imagine – through no fault of their own. In September, 2006, I moved back to the UK because there was no work in Mallorca, and I had separated from my husband. It’s now 2013, I’m divorced, I live alone with my boys, but I am happy for the most part. Those moves around the country and abroad don’t total the number of times I’ve moved. I’ve moved house more times than I’ve had hot dinners, I don’t think I’m done yet. I move when I’m restless. When I can’t move, I change the living room around. It changes a lot.
